Big day for Pinoy netters

Treat Huey and Max Mirnyi outlasted Canada’s Daniel Nestor and Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek, 6-4, 6-4, and advanced to the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open yesterday in Spain.

The unseeded Huey and Mirnyi will next face eighth seed Vasek Pospisil of Canada and American Jack Sock, who earned an opening round bye.

Ruben Gonzales, meanwhile, cruised into the quarterfinals of the $10,000 Tampa USTA Men’s Pro Circuit Futures in Florida with partner Eric Quigley after dumping Great Britain’s Joe Cooper and Dominican Republic’s Michael-Ray Pallares-Gozalez, 6-0, 6-3.

Gonzales and Quigley will be up against Americans Jarmere Jenkins and Nathan Pasha, who scored a 6-2, 6-2 winover Germany’s Joel Vincent Link and United States’ Aron Pierce.

Junior bets Khim Iglupas and Alberto Lim Jr. also moved into the girls’ and boys’ quarters of the Asian B1 ITF Pune Open Junior Tennis Championships in India.

Iglupas stunned Chinese fourth pick Du Zhima, 6-3, 6-4, while Lim walloped Adil Kalyanpur of India, 6-3, 6-2.
