Mixed fortunes for PH netters

Treat Huey and Slovakian partner Martin Klizan fell in the first round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells in California yesterday, but not without a fight.

The duo, who came in unseeded, gave fourth seed Jamie Murray of Great Britain and Bruno Soares of Brazil a scare as they brought the match to a third and deciding set before folding, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 11-9.

It was Huey’s first tournament since steering the Philippine Davis Cup team to a 5-0 rout of Kuwait in the Asia Oceania Zone Group II first round tie held in Pasig City two weeks ago.

Huey’s fellow Davis Cupper, Francis Casey Alcantara, meanwhile, won his first two qualifying round matches to move a win away from earning a main draw berth at the $25,000 USA Futures in Bakersfield, California.

Alcantara, a 2009 Australian Open juniors doubles champion, whipped compatriot Emmanuel Vacalares, 6-2, 6-3 before surviving American Jonathan Chang, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Fil-German Katharina Lehnert, however, stumbled in her third qualifying round match at the $25,000 Canberra Claycourt International in Australia with a 6-7 (4), 5-7 loss to United States’ Yuki Christina Chiang.
