Petrombon posts first win in Asia-Oceania tilt

Jeson Patrombon opened the Philippines’ campaign in the first round of the Asia-Oceania Group 2 Davis Cup tournament with a resounding 6-0, 6-2, 6-1 win over Abdulrahman Alawadhi of Kuwait, on Friday at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City.

“Pressured ako nung first set kasi nafi-feel ko na magaling yung kalaban. Pero nung nag lead na ako ng 3-0 to 5-0 at nakuha ko yung first set, nagkaroon na ako ng kumpiyansa,” said Patrombon during the post-match conference.

“Tinuloy ko lang yung laro ko at hindi ko binigyan ng chance yung kalaban ko,” he added.

The 22-year old Patrombon easily dominated the match with his backhanded plays to control the over-all game.

“He’s been playing a lot of international play. He is a lot different in the past. He played very very well,” said Philippine Tennis Association Chairman of the Board Jean Henri Lhuillier.

Patrombon, who is a native from Illigan City, improved his Davis Cup record to four wins and three losses.

His compatriot Ruben Gonzales, meanwhile, is still playing at of press time against Mohammad Ghareeb.

Filipino-American Treat Huey and Francis Casey Alcantara will test their mettle against the tandem of Mohammad Ghareeb and Abdulhamid Mubarak on Saturday at 6 p.m.

If necessary, Patrombon and Gonzales will play in reverse singles match on Sunday.

Both countries have already met in 2007, with the Philippines winning 5-0.

The Cebuana Lhuiller Philippine team is aiming to return to the Group 1 of the Davis Cup tournament.
