Alcantara advances

Getting a good warm up, Francis Casey Alcantara downed Taiwanese Meng Cing-Yang, 7-5, 6-4, to jumpstart his title bid in the Indonesia F6 Futures tournament yesterday in Jakarta.

Alcantara, who advanced to the doubles quarterfinals the other day, proved too quick and too smart for his rival in the $10,000 International Tennis Federation event as he came through with big shots when he needed it most.

The country’s former top junior netter, however, needed 1 hour and 21 minutes in besting his rival.

Alcantara, 24, highlighted his win by firing five aces that cushioned the impact of committing three double faults.

The triumph set up the Filipino Davis Cupper a date with wildcard bet Arief Rahman of Indonesia, who advanced after Indonesian second pick Christopher Rungkat retired while trailing 2-1.
