Sania-Barbora win doubles first round; Bopanna-Mergea upset

Punjab News Express/Balbir Singh CINCINNATI : On a day when four top seeds -- second seed Stan Wawrinka, third seed Rafel Nadal, fifth seed Kei Nishikori and seventh seed -- made their exit from singles losing their third round round matches, Sania Mirza of India, pairing Barbora Strycova of Czech Republic, won their first round doubles match defeating Darija Jurak (Crotia) and Anastasia Rodionova of Australia 6-2, 6-3 in the $ 4,362,385 Western & Southern Open (US Open Series) here today.

Mirza/Strycova won four out of eight break points while Jurak/Rodinova could convert only one out of eight. The Indo/Czech pair won 61 per cent of service points (32/52) and Jurak/Rodinova claimed 46 per cent (22 out of 47). Jurak/Rodionova had 70 per cent of their first service in and Mirza/Strycoa recorded 63 per cent.

Seventh seeded Indian Davis Cupper and Florin Mergea of Roumania were upset by Treat Huey of Philippines and Max Mirnyi of Belarus who won their second round doubles match in one hour and seven minutes by 7-6 (3), 6-4. Bopanna/Mergea were given a first round bye.

Bopanna/Mergea lost despite serving 13 aces in reply to seven by their opponents. In a close encounter, Huey/Mirnyi won 47 out of 61 service points (77 per cent) while Bopanna/Mergea won won 42 out of 61 service points (68 per cent).

Unseeded Australian Bernard Tomic continued his winning spree with his second successive upset wins on way to singles quarter-final. Today Tomic upset fifth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5). In his second round Tomic had stunned 11th seed David Goffin 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Bernard Tomic on Thrusday fired 10 aces and won 76 per cent of first-serve points in one hour and 58 minutes display to fine tennis.

NextGen star Borna Coric of Coratia also pulled off a big upset as he defeated formidable third seed Rafel Nadal of Spain 6-1, 6-3 in one hour and 13 minutes. Coric unleashed eight aces and committed one double fault. Nadal got one ace and committed five double faults. Coric won 68 per cent points on his first service while Nadal got 67 per cent. Coric won five out of eight break points while Nadal won one out of three.

Coric won 10 games in a row against Nadal to win the opening set and took a 4-0 lead in the second set. After getting medical attention on his left wrist Nadal continued to fight spiritedly. However Nadal could not cope up with the sizzling groundstrokes of Coric.

Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria shocked second seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-4, 6-4 in 82 minutes. His opponent in quarter-final will be American Steve Johnson who ousted seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 6-3,7-6 (4).
